IL Senate Bill Removing Statute of Limitations On Child Sex Cases Signed into Law
A major barrier to prosecute rape and sexual assault cases against children is the short period of time survivors have to confront their attackers. IL Senate Bill 189, which gives survivors of sexual abuse the ability to confront their attackers, was signed into law in 2017.
On March 29, 2017, the Illinois Senate passed the Senate Bill 189 unanimously, which seeks to eliminate “the statute of limitations for all felony child abuse and sexual assault crimes.”
Then on May 18, 2017 the Illinois House passed the bill unanimously as well. In August 2017, Governor Rauner signed the bill into law thus eliminating the “the statutes of limitations for all felony criminal sexual assault and sexual abuse crimes against children.” The law became effective immediately in August when Governor Rauner signed it.
Senate Bill 189 removed the statute of limitations for felony criminal sexual abuse and sex crimes against children, which allows for the prosecution of these offenses at any time.
